So after my initial attempt at shooting the product images I'm working on with strobes, I ended up with 8 very badly underexposed sheets of 4x5 film, and a very, very bad headache. I'm still not sure what went wrong, but after scanning my film in the EXACT OPPOSITE manner I would normally scan it, and alot of playing around in photoshop, I ended up with this. Not so bad, if you ask me. I think maybe my lighting on the left side of the image was a little darker than I'd like, but I hopefully can fix that fairly easily. I may go back tomorrow morning and scan the rest of the images I left out because I didn't think I could get anything from them.

Anyhow, just in case anyone notices anything I may have done wrong when setting up the strobes, here is a little overview of what I did when shooting these.
-I had the battery set at full power (1600 watts) and set at the symmetrical distribution setting, with two lights set up. I'm using a friend's speedatron brown line kit.
-I had one light set up on the left shooting through an umbrella, roughly at a 45 degree angle from the object. I also had the same wattage light set up at the same angle on the right, with a softbox.
-I metered the light with the light meter facing the camera, the light meter on the cord setting (the lightning bolt with the c). The ISO was set for 160, which was the speed film I was using.
-I had the bulb cap on, not the conical cap with the flat meter. Could that be my problem?
-I plugged the cord into the meter, metering the light with the light meter actually touching the objects I photographed. By touching I mean laying flat against them. I made sure the meter read the same throughout the image, since I don't have a digital camera to preview the light.
-I then plugged the cord into the lens (schneider symar 210) and took the picture, the lens set at f16 @ a 15th. Obviously I took out the dark slide.

Any thoughts on what may have gone wrong? Anyone? I know I know a bunch of 4x5 photographers who know how to answer tech questions...

-make a performance of not knowing how to perform. stand awkwardly in front of the camera, in a corner or on a street near my apartment and film the action. don't tell anyone about it in advance and let the video stand in for the actual piece.

-take off all your clothes and lay them out piece by piece in front of you. empty your pockets. fold up your glasses and leave them on the floor. put them back on in the reverse order you took them off. photograph each item as you remove it.

It brings me great pleasure to announce that I have been accepted into the MFA Photography program at Columbia College Chicago. Columbia College has some amazing work being made by it's faculty, student body and alumni, and I am extremely proud to be attending this fall.

On that note, Colin and I will be moving out to Chicago at the end of June, as I will have my first solo show at the EBERSMOORE gallery opening in July. In order to save up money for the big move (who knew UHaul could cost so much?) I'm holding a print sale until the month of June. The image is from my new series I'll Take Care Of You, in which I photograph myself with everyone I have dated, regardless of the duration of the relationship. The series is nearing completion and I'm excited to offer the image to the public. The image is Untitled (Meredith and I), 2010, is an edition of 25, and $100 each.

So this seems like a good time to reevaluate things, as I'm preparing for a big move from New York to Chicago to start grad school in the fall at Columbia College Chicago (so psyched!). At this point, I'm thinking I'll be using the blog to post new things I'm working on, and not just defined projects, and think about new ideas. Sometimes I think Facebook has made posting people's work I really like kind of obsolete, but whatever.

some thoughts:
-looser photographs. things might not have to be so defined all the time.
-subtitles. i love the idea of adding subtext to an image that may or may not be related.
-invest in a hasselblad. my mamiya is sometimes hard to focus through the viewfinder because it's a little dark. does this basically mean i'm blind?
-photographs of people alone at bars / awkward people not quite part of a conversation / people lingering.
-go outside.
-photograph rainy days.
-photograph the holes in my walls as i patch them up.
-junk pressed into the sidewalk.
-buy more john divola books.
-make more text pieces.
-maybe the photographs of my ex's should have subtitles? like in foreign films?

Found David Benjamin Sherry's book It's Time at Spoonbill the other day, and while I think some of the work is a little goofy for my tastes, his use of color is really weird and interesting. I don't know if I completely buy this work, it's maybe a little too "cool" and calculated for me (the picture of Kim Gordon walking through the forest in particular), but I think it is really exciting. What I find so exciting about it, however, is the way it's so varied, but doesn't manage to come off as diaristic. It's like some weird combination of Science Fiction, Found Photographs, Slits album covers and Performance and it feels like something weird and awesome and new. I can't wait to see where his work goes next.

So I've been obsessing over Katy Grannan's Model American book over the past few days. I can't seem to put it down, though I've had it sitting on my bookshelf for years. I've been looking alot at her work from the early 2000's in particular. There is something really beautiful about the way her subjects carry themselves, how fragile the seem while they're trying to pose for the camera. I usually hate the way strobes look in photographs, but the way Grannan uses them in these photographs makes so much sense... it's as if she's consciously catching a deer in headlights or placing her subjects in a situation where they can't help but be caught off guard. In any event, I really, really enjoy this quote they have at the end of the book:

"I guess portraits are a way of honoring people that I hardly know but already miss." - Katy Grannan.

Anyone who is friends with me on facebook has already read this most likely, but I still love it, so whatever.

Two images from a recent shoot I did with my ex-girlfriend and longtime friend Meredith for the I'll Take Care of You project... Can't quite decide which image I like better, though I'm leaning towards the image in the bedroom... I just really like the angle I'm sitting at, and the lighting. It sort of reminds me of this image I took of my friends Scott and Brian, back when they were dating a few years ago. I'm wondering if maybe I want to show multiple moments from one session with certain people, perhaps working them into dyptichs or something as a way of extending that relationship... hmmmm.

So I've been super busy working on a new project I shot for an upcoming show at Bard College, and unfortunately I can't have any of those images on the web until after the show opens in June, so blogging has been pretty slow. Obviously anyone who follows this blog can see that haha. I've just about finished the work for that project, so it's given me a little bit more time to focus on my other work, and I'll be shooting I'll Take Care Of You again much more frequently starting this week. So expect more entries as the days unfold.

This is an image I took right when I started the project that I hadn't gotten to until now... it takes it in a slightly different direction that I'm really excited to play around with. I really like the movement in my hand and some of the movement in the fabric of my shirt. When I took view camera at Purchase with my professor Jed Devine, I often had a hard time making portraits with my 4x5 because I so often shot in low light. I would end up with photographs of people whose faces were moving and blurry, but whose clothes were sharp and in focus. Jed once said in class how with photographs, portraits could often have a connotation of death involved, with people being crisp and still for the life of the photograph. Portraits with movement often allowed for a little more life - evidence of someone breathing, or unable to sit still, etc. I like the idea of these being an acknowledgement of a relationship that is now in the past, but also allowing for the implied relationship to be seen as something more continuous. There's something about providing a space to look back that feels really necessary and important.

I'll Take Care Of You

Started working on a new project, tentatively called I'll Take Care Of You. This came out a little softer than I would have liked, but I think it's a nice beginning. I really like the tension in the way Ryan's hand is placed on top of mine; how strange and awkward it feels to suddenly be aware that you are touching another person, not really being sure of what that means about your relationship. I'm really excited to see how the rest of the images come out as I work on them over the holiday. It's a little nerve wracking to throw myself back into self-portraits, as I haven't really photographed myself since graduating from college in 2005, but I'm looking forward to the challenge.

Like I said, just a beginning, but definitely more to come in the near future.

Larry Sultan

Larry Sultan died yesterday of cancer at the age of 63. I paid monumental late fees at the Purchase College Library because I had kept out "Pictures From Home" for an entire semester because I just couldn't stop looking at it. I carried that book around with me everywhere I went for most of the fall of 2003. It was, and still is, one of the most influential books and bodies of work I've ever come across in my life. I am currently in the process of applying to the California College of the Arts, mainly because I wanted to study with him.

A really great description of his father's reactions to his photographs of him that ran in his obituary in the times this morning:
"Mr. Sultan’s father, Irving, speaking of a picture of himself in a suit sitting on the edge of a bed with a vacant stare on his face, related how his son had instructed him not to smile and had created a portrait that the elder Mr. Sultan felt was much more about the photographer than the photographed.

“ ‘Any time you show that picture,’ ” Mr. Sultan said his father told him, “‘you tell people that that’s not me sitting on the bed looking all dressed up and nowhere to go, depressed. That’s you sitting on the bed, and I am happy to help you with the project, but let’s get things straight here.’ ” His parents died not long after the work was completed."

Rest in peace, Larry.

I dreamt last night that i was photographing a gallery opening at some big, nameless art gallery in a high rise overlooking central park for PMC, because all of our real photographers were in Hawaii on vacation. They gave me a little plastic rectangular camera, the kind kodak used to make when I was a kid that used the tiny 8mm film, and told me to use the on camera flash if there wasn't enough light. I got to the gallery and suddenly everyone was praising me for the pictures I was taking, even though they hadn't seen them and I was totally inadequate. Afterwords, I went to develop the film and there was nothing inside the camera: it was just a black plastic box.

New 4x5 image. Not really sure how this fits in with the others, but I really like the light in it and I've been feeling like there needs to be some sort of expansion on the more two dimensional images of objects and photographs. I'm still making those images in addition to images like this one, but I don't think they work solely on they're own. I'm still not sure if this an entirely successful image, but I think it's a good step. Any thoughts?

Michael Wolf's Transparent City

Great video interview over at Conscientious with Michael Wolf about his Transparent City project that's up at Aperture right now. Strangely enough, I was walking around galleries in chelsea on Saturday and managed to somehow bump into Joerg Colburg at pretty much every space I went to, and happened to be looking at the Michael Wolf show while he was doing this interview. Really weird. Also, I was looking at the Barbara Crane show in back and almost literally bumped into Todd Papageorge, which made for a pretty awkward "you're in the way of the photographs I'm looking at" dance around a cluster of images. I'm very, very easily intimidated by people in the art world. Go figure.

I found this David Horvitz screenshot this morning, it's the latest added to his blog. It's weirdly reminiscent of "The Things I Once Owned". New shrine sculpture! Still in progress, but I'm really excited about it so far. I think I might frame the print and lean it against the wall, though I'm not sure. Also, brightly colored vigil candles are going underneath the desk, which the viewer will be encouraged to light with long matches.
